| Notes: | A very unusual West Timor all-ikat man’s wrap in coarse handspun cotton, composed of two panels (joined along the centre vertically along the warp) and carrying an abstract design in ecru on a naturally died blue indigo ground. There is evidence of red over dying on the ecru which is now somewhat faded. All-ikat cloths are quite rare in Timor. Three panel cloths are more common. It is difficult to interpret but the motif is most probably a very abstract rendition of a crocodile, looking directly into its mouth. It also carries plain woven narrow warp striped side panels in red, orange, white and lime green. The crocodile motif is the most common animal motif in Timor cloths equated with Uis Neno, the supreme being in the Islands animist religion, the Lord of Heaven and the god of water (Yeager, R.M. and Jacobson, M.I., 2002). |
